Why Evidence Quality Matters for Pet Supplements
The pet supplement industry is loosely regulated compared to prescription veterinary medications. Unlike drugs, supplements generally don't require clinical proof of efficacy before reaching store shelves. That means the burden falls on owners and veterinarians to sort credible research from marketing claims.
When evaluating any supplement, it helps to ask: Has it been tested in the target species (not just humans or lab animals)? Were the studies placebo-controlled and peer-reviewed? And is there an established dose with a known safety profile? The effective dose varies by body weight and indication, making veterinary guidance essential.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin: These compounds are widely used for joint health in dogs and cats. Evidence is mixed but generally supportive for mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis, particularly when used as part of a broader management plan. Some studies show modest improvements in mobility scores; results are rarely dramatic but side effects are generally minimal at recommended doses.
Probiotics: Specific veterinary-formulated strains have shown benefit for acute diarrhea and some cases of inflammatory bowel conditions. The key caveat is strain specificity — not all probiotic products contain strains validated in companion animals. Human products are not automatically interchangeable.
EPA and DHA

Supplements with Limited or Insufficient Evidence
Antioxidants (Vitamins C and E): While these play important roles in normal metabolism, supplementing healthy pets eating a complete and balanced diet provides no established benefit. Excess fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate to harmful levels. Context matters enormously here.
Herbal and Botanical Products: Products like turmeric, milk thistle, and valerian root are commonly marketed for pets. While some show preliminary activity in lab settings, robust clinical trials in dogs and cats are largely absent. Safety data is also limited, and some herbs interact with medications.
