Core vaccines are those recommended for every animal of a given species, regardless of lifestyle or geography. They protect against diseases that are widespread, severe, or transmissible to humans. For dogs, core vaccines include rabies, canine distemper, canine parvovirus, and canine adenovirus (hepatitis). For cats, the standard core set covers rabies, feline panleukopenia (feline distemper), feline herpesvirus-1, and feline calicivirus — the last three often combined in a single FVRCP shot.

Non-core vaccines are administered based on a specific animal's risk profile — their environment, activities, and exposure likelihood. Bordetella (kennel cough), leptospirosis, Lyme disease, and canine influenza fall into this category for dogs. What the Vaccination Schedule Actually Means

Puppies and kittens typically begin their primary series between six and eight weeks of age. These early shots are given in a series spaced three to four weeks apart — usually concluding around 16 weeks — because maternal antibodies wane unpredictably. A single shot before 16 weeks may be neutralized before the immune system fully responds, which is why the series, not just one dose, is essential.

Booster timing after the initial series depends on the vaccine type. Rabies vaccination is legally mandated in most U.S. states, with initial boosters required one year after the puppy or kitten series, then every one to three years depending on the vaccine product and local law. Other core vaccines, when given to adult animals with a documented prior series, are often extended to three-year intervals based on immunological evidence of sustained protection.

Non-core vaccines like leptospirosis and Bordetella generally require annual boosters because the immunity they confer is shorter-lived. This is an area where your pet's lifestyle genuinely drives the decision: a dog that never enters a boarding facility or dog park has a fundamentally different leptospirosis risk than one that swims in rural ponds or attends group training classes.

Skipping or significantly delaying booster doses can reset protection — in some cases, a lapsed series may need to be restarted. Delayed veterinary care often leads to lapses in vaccine coverage that are costlier to address than maintaining a consistent schedule.

Practical Guidance for Pet Owners

Keep a written or digital record of every vaccine your pet receives, including the product name, lot number, date administered, and the veterinarian or clinic. This record is essential for boarding facilities, groomers, and if you travel across state lines with your pet.

Adopted Pets With Unknown Vaccine History

If your newly adopted pet has no vaccine records, don't assume they're protected. Your vet may recommend starting key portions of the core series over. Titer testing can help assess immunity for certain diseases but is not accepted as a legal substitute for rabies vaccination in most U.S. jurisdictions.

If you adopt an adult pet with an unknown or incomplete vaccine history, your vet may recommend restarting certain portions of the core series rather than assuming prior immunity. Titer testing — a blood test measuring existing antibody levels — is an option for some vaccines (notably distemper and parvovirus) to assess whether re-vaccination is warranted, though it is not universally available or accepted as a substitute for all requirements.

Vaccine reactions, while uncommon, are worth knowing. Mild lethargy or slight soreness at the injection site for 24 to 48 hours is normal. Signs that warrant a prompt call to your vet include facial swelling, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or collapse — these may indicate a hypersensitivity reaction requiring immediate attention.

Combine vaccine discussions with broader preventive care planning. Parasite prevention and vaccinations are complementary pillars of a pet's health strategy, and many vets address both at the same visit. Staying current on both protects your pet across the most common preventable health threats they'll face.
